Book release of History of Hindostanis By Prof. Dr. Chan Choenni

The Centre for South Indian Studies organised a warm and memorable book release programme on 16 December 2025 at Anna Centenary Library for the book History of Hindostanis by Prof. Dr. Chan Choenni. The event brought together scholars, history enthusiasts, and students to commemorate and engage with the rich heritage and historical contributions of the Hindustani diaspora.

The event began with a relaxed hi-tea, offering participants an opportunity to interact informally. After that the dignitaries assembled on the dais, and the programme formally commenced with the soulful rendition of Tamil Thai Vazthu.

Afterwards, Pugazh from CSIS addressed the gathering on the occasion of Vijay Diwas. His brief yet moving message was followed by a one-minute silence, as the audience paid homage to the brave soldiers.

Then welcome address was delivered by Abishek N.K. from CSIS, who set an encouraging and respectful tone for the event.

This was followed by a felicitation ceremony during which M. Kumaresan honoured the guests. Adv. B. Jagannath presented copies of the book Gazululakshminarasuchetty to Dr. Malini Parthasarathy and Prof. Dr. Chan Choenni as a mark of appreciation and respect.

The highlight of the evening took place at when the Chief Guest, Dr. Malini Parthasarathy received the first copy of the book History of Hindustanis from the author Prof. Dr. Chan Choenni drawing warm applause from the audience.

Afterwards Dr. Malini Parthasarathy gave a speech about the thoughtful observations on the significance of diaspora narratives in shaping historical understanding.

Then Prof. Dr. Chan Choenni addressed the gathering, sharing fascinating insights from his research and speaking about his personal journey in documenting the history of the Hindustani community.

This was followed by Adv. B. Jagannath’s address, in which he highlighted the book’s importance and its value for future generations. He also spoke about the concept of indentured labour, its evolution, and the profound impact it had on native Indians. He emphasised the difficulties and hardships that ancestors endured when they were taken as indentured labourers.

At the conclusion of the program, Vignesh from CSIS proposed the vote of thanks, expressing sincere gratitude to the speakers, guests, organisers, and attendees who contributed to the success of the event.

The programme concluded on a dignified and symbolic note with the national anthems of Suriname and India, highlighting the enduring cultural and historical connections between the two nations.

Adv. C.K. Chandrasekhar skilfully anchored the event as compere, ensuring a smooth flow and engaging atmosphere throughout the evening.

Overall, the event was a meaningful celebration of history, culture, and community. It left participants inspired and keen to explore History of Hindustanis, once again demonstrating how books can unite people and preserve important stories for generations to come.
