The special Commemoration Lecture on the historic 1801 Jambudweep Proclamation of the Maruthu Brothers on 11 June 2026 at Shrimati Indira Gandhi College, Chathiram Bus Stand, Tiruchirappalli. The event brought together around 170 scholars, intellectuals, students, and members of the public to reflect on one of the earliest and most significant calls for unity in India’s freedom struggle.
The programme began with a warm welcome address by Shri. Vijayavel, who highlighted the importance of remembering the foundational yet often overlooked chapters of Tamil resistance that contributed to the larger national freedom movement. This was followed by a thought-provoking keynote lecture by Sri. Ramesh, a journalist from Madurai. He described the Jambudweep Proclamation as the earliest modern political expression of the Idea of India as a unified civilizational entity and drew references from Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy and the Thirukkural to emphasise the spiritual strength behind the Maruthu Brothers’ resistance.
A powerful special address was delivered by Major Madhan Kumar, a former army officer from Coimbatore. He provided a detailed geopolitical and military analysis of the South Indian Rebellion of 1801, challenging conventional narratives. He highlighted the pioneering strategies employed by Queen Velu Nachiyar and her commander Kuyili, including the first recorded human suicide strike in Asian history against the British ammunition depot. He also underscored the legal and political brilliance of the 1801 proclamation, which declared that a company of traders had no right to rule sovereign Indian soil.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri. Thamu, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, the management of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College and all participants for their active involvement. The commemoration lecture successfully revived the spirit of the 1801 Jambudweep Proclamation and reinforced the importance of preserving and celebrating Tamil Nadu’s significant contribution to India’s freedom struggle.
